What is a Denture?

A denture is a prosthetic, removable device that replaces missing teeth or infected teeth. It is supported by the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

When to use Dentures?

You may experience tooth loss from a variety of reasons including tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, or via a traumatic injury. When you lose a tooth, its adjacent teeth may move, shift, bend, or tilt over time. This puts more stress on your jaws and teeth, leading to inability to chew or bite properly. Eventually this could lead to tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, and a sagging facial appearance making you look older.

Dentures are then considered an option to replace missing teeth and restore your oral health.

What are the different Types of Dentures?

Based on the severity of edentulism (aka tooth loss) and the possibility of preserving your jawbone, one of the three dentures would be considered.

Removable Partial Dentures (RPD): If some of your natural teeth are missing (on a particular arch) or need removal, an RPD is used.

Fixed Partial Dentures (FPD): They are also known as Bridge or Overdentures. It is a prosthesis that acts as a bridge to cover the gap of the missing teeth. It is also used when some of your natural teeth are missing, similar to RPDs.

Completed Dentures: If all your natural teeth in either maxillary (upper) arch or mandibular (lower) arch are missing or need removal, complete dentures are used. Commonly, both arches are fitted with complete dentures.

What are the Benefits of Dentures?

  1. Eat like normal: As you get comfortable using and living with dentures, you will more easily eat food.

  2. Speak like normal: A denture attempts to restore and improves your ability to speak. Your sounds are clearer and your pronunciation improves.

  3. Improvement in your Natural Appearance: Dentures closely resemble your natural teeth as they are similar in appearance. They restore your smile, correct any facial sage, your look, and your overall facial appearance.

  4. Improvement in your Oral Hygiene: It reduces stress on your jaw and lowers the risk of gum disease.
